San Benito Man Arrested for Making Counterfeit Money


SAN BENITO - Investigators busted a San Benito man for making counterfeit money.

Rolando Mario Juarez a.k.a. 72Blazer is now behind bars.

The Secret Service and the Cameron County District Attorney's Office seized a thousand dollars in fake cash, as well as a laptop, printer, and three cars.

Officials tell NEWSCHANNEL 5 criminals are using fake bills at small businesses.

Lilliana Velasquez, the District Attorney Public Information Officer, says, "They were going to small businesses and buying small items like gum, candy, watermelon, fruit. And then in return, they would receive the change in legitimate bills."

Workers at a farmers' market, a cafe, and even a snow cone stand say they've all come across the fake money.

They say they're now using a pen to detect phony money. The pen turns black on fake money and yellow on legitimate bills.

But we're told criminals are now making fake bills of small denomination, like $10. Businesses usually don't suspect those bills could be fake.
